Every patient-monitoring or diagnostic device starts the same way: someone has to get a signal from the patient to the electronics. Before the final cable design is locked, engineers need something real to prototype against. Leadwire development kits are built for that job, and this post covers how to choose one and which OCP parts to start with.
What a leadwire development kit is
The kits below are described on their product pages as intended for cable assembly product development use. Most are blunt cut with the jacket stripped and retained, so your team can terminate them to your own connector, test them on the bench and iterate without waiting on a custom build.
What to decide before you pick a kit
Electrode interface
The patient end drives everything else. Our line includes 4mm snap and mini snap leadwires, DIN 1.5mm leadwires, silver chloride electrode disk leads and alligator clip leads. Match the interface to the electrodes or accessories your device will use.
Shielding and conductor
Shielded, high-stranded 24 AWG conductors are used in the snap kits. Shielding helps keep a low-level physiological signal clean, and a high-strand conductor stays flexible through repeated handling.
Jacket material and biocompatibility
Our kits use medical grade TPE or PVC jackets. The 4mm snap and mini snap kits list an ISO 10993-5 compatible jacket with shield. Confirm what your own regulatory plan requires and review the product page for the specific part.
Color coding
AHA coded kits come as five leadwires in brown, white, red, black and green, with color and graphics coding so each lead is easy to identify. Six-lead DIN and silver chloride kits come as two each of black, white, yellow, brown, green and red.
Reusable or disposable
The TPE-jacketed AHA kit is designed for reusable, high reliability applications. If your design is disposable, look at our SureLine disposable medical cable assemblies as well.

Using blunt cut kits on the bench
Because the jacket is already stripped and retained, a blunt cut kit lets you move straight to termination. A few habits save time in development:
- Prototype the whole chain. Terminate the kit to your real connector or yoke early, so strain relief, shield termination and connector fit are tested before tooling decisions.
- Test noise with the shield connected the way production will connect it. A shield that floats on the bench can behave very differently once installed in the device.
- Handle the leads like a clinician would. Repeated clipping, snapping and flexing shows quickly whether the grip points and clip style suit your users.
- Keep the part numbers. Record the kit Part # you prototyped with so a custom production version can reference the same construction.
Leadwire kit selection checklist
- Identify the electrode or patient-end interface: snap, mini snap, DIN, silver chloride disk or clip.
- Decide if you need AHA color and graphics coding.
- Check the jacket material (TPE or PVC) and the ISO 10993-5 listing on the product page.
- Confirm shielding is included for low-level signal paths.
- Choose length: most kits are 36 inch, and the silver chloride kit is offered in 24, 36 and 48 inch.
- Plan how you will terminate the blunt cut ends on the bench.
- Check any peripheral cables with patient skin contact, such as the biocompatible USB 3.0 extension.
